Permeke Museum wanted to provide extra information about artworks in an accessible, sustainable and user-friendly way. Their diverse audience had to be taken into account for developing the app.

An accessible, user-friendly app for self-guided museum tours with extra information about the artworks. Also, a web application for the Permeke team to easily add and adapt their tours and resources.

During a co-creation journey, we started from a rough idea to a digitalised solution that answered the needs of Permeke Museum in the most cost-efficient way.

Client Ambition

  • The art museum is located in the old housing of the Belgian artist, Constant Permeke. They want their visitors to have a pleasant and accessible visiting experience by providing tours and using technology.
  • The team of Permeke wants to be flexible in the tours they provide. For example: if they get a new artwork or replace one, they want to be able to update the tours and info quickly for visitors.
  • Permeke Museum aims to reduce waste, for example in the form of tour flyers.

Client Challenge

  • As the museum is located in the authentic housing of the former artist, the technology infrastructure is not optimal. As a main problem, a part of the art exhibition is located outside, where there is no internet connection.
  • The information they want to provide to visitors is diverse: regular text, images but also videos and audio fragments.
  • Besides the information, their visitors are diverse, meaning the app should be as accessible as possible for everyone.

Solution

  • A user-friendly app for visitors with various tours, each accompanied by relevant information about the artworks.
  • Even in places with no or a poor Internet connection, the app continues to work optimally.
  • Accessibility is key in the app. For example: fonts are adjustable in size and users can change the language of the whole app to four languages.
  • An admin web portal for the staff of the museum where they can easily adjust every tour with new resources or delete or add tours. This portal is designed in a very intuitive way, so it’s manageable for all staff members without any technological knowledge.

Approach

  1. A workshop was held in which the difficulties were identified through an analysis of the process, and different solutions were discussed and illustrated.
  2. A lot of emphasis was placed on understandable communication and accessibility. As the client doesn’t have a technical background, we find it important to explain technological choices and concepts in a way that is easy to understand.
  3. The budget for this project was rather limited so we brainstormed about how to deliver maximal value within the budget. 
  4. Through close collaboration between we are and Permeke Museum and quick feedback rounds in the development phase, results followed quickly. The app could be tested by the Permeke Museum and friends, who could provide final feedback.
  5. In the upcoming period, we are is supporting Permeke by maintaining the app in every way.

Outcome

  • An enhanced museum experience for every visitor. The museum has become even more appealing and accessible to visitors due to the added value of the tour app.
  • The whole process of offering self guided tours is way faster and more sustainable, as the amount of paper use is reduced with 85%. Tours can be adapted as many times as possible and there is no software partner needed for that.
  • A satisfaction rate of the visitors about the overall museum experience of 95%.
  • The entire project was finished after 8 weeks, including testing phases.
